Comparison
FLOWSTER vs. Microsoft Power Automate: which platform fits your IT?
Both platforms automate processes – but with a different focus. Power Automate is strong inside Microsoft 365 and for office workflows. FLOWSTER is built for deep IT automation in your own data center: servers, directory services, VMs, permissions – deterministic, audit-proof and hosted in Germany.
The short answer
- Power Automate is the right choice when your processes mainly live in Microsoft 365 (SharePoint, Teams, Outlook) and cloud operation is uncritical.
- FLOWSTER is the right choice when you automate infrastructure and IT processes (VM deployment, Active Directory, onboarding, permissions), have to run on-premise, and need audit-proof logging plus a role and approval model for enterprise environments.
- Many customers run both: Power Automate for office workflows, FLOWSTER as the execution layer inside IT.
Detailed comparison
| FLOWSTER | Microsoft Power Automate | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | IT & infrastructure automation (servers, AD, VM, backup) | Office and business workflows within Microsoft 365 |
| Deployment model | On-premise, private cloud or hosted in Germany | Microsoft cloud (on-premise only via data gateway) |
| Data sovereignty / GDPR | Development and hosting in Germany, data stays in your data center | US vendor, EU data boundary configurable |
| Execution | Deterministic workflows, PowerShell-native, versioned | Connector-based flows, partly cloud-dependent |
| Self-service portal | Built in, with forms, roles and approvals | Requires Power Apps licensing on top |
| Governance & audit | RBAC, approval workflows, audit-proof logging | Available, depends on licence tier and tenant setup |
| Microsoft 365 integration | Via connectors and APIs | Native and very deep |
| Prebuilt connectors | IT systems, ITSM suites, directory services, hypervisors | Very large connector ecosystem for SaaS services |
| AI support | FLOWSTER AI Studio: prompt to form and workflow, your own model possible | Copilot, bound to Microsoft models |
| Cost model | Platform licence without per-flow billing | User or process based licensing, premium connectors extra |
Which platform when?
Power Automate fits when …
- your processes run almost entirely in Microsoft 365
- the job is approvals, notifications and list workflows
- cloud operation is organisationally unproblematic
- business units should build small automations themselves
FLOWSTER fits when …
- you automate IT operations: VM, AD, onboarding, permissions, backup
- data and execution must stay in your own data center
- you need audit-proof logging and an approval model
- PowerShell know-how exists and should become reusable
- business units should order through a self-service portal
Frequently asked questions
Does FLOWSTER replace Power Automate?
Not necessarily. FLOWSTER replaces Power Automate where IT-centric processes with high governance requirements are automated. For pure Office 365 workflows Power Automate remains useful – both platforms can run in parallel and be connected via interfaces.
Can FLOWSTER run fully on-premise?
Yes. FLOWSTER runs in your own data center, in a private cloud or hosted in Germany. There is no obligation to move data into an external cloud.
Do I need programming skills?
No. Workflows are modelled in a graphical designer. PowerShell knowledge helps, because existing scripts can be reused directly and turned into versioned workflows.
How does the licence model differ?
Power Automate bills per user or per process, and premium connectors cost extra. FLOWSTER is licensed as a platform – the number of executed workflows does not drive cost up linearly.
Is FLOWSTER GDPR-compliant?
Yes. Development and hosting take place in Germany, on-premise operation is possible, access is controlled via RBAC and logged in an audit-proof way.
